Academics

Welcome to our Early Childhood program, where academics come to life for students in Pre-K through grade 1. Our dedicated teachers design engaging and effective learning experiences that align with the New York State Learning Standards. We ensure every student is actively involved in their education, providing a strong foundation for future success. Our goal is to make learning an exciting and interactive journey, helping children practice and master essential skills in a dynamic and supportive environment.

Universal Pre-Kindergarten (UPK)

The VCS offers Pre-Kindergarten as a New York State funded program specifically designed for 4-year-olds not eligible for kindergarten. Each year, VCS  invites eligible children who reside in the district to apply. The district is pleased to be able to offer our community full-day (five hours) and half-day (2.5 hours) options. Transportation is not part of this state-funded program.

The play-based program engages students in social and emotional skills with a heavy emphasis on communication. We offer an in-district full-day program and half-day programs, and additionally partner with 3 outstanding community based child care providers. Locations are determined by a random lottery, after the registration period.  If your child did not receive a slot in the lottery, they will move to a waitlist and may receive a slot as they open. Participation in a Pre-Kindergarten program is not required for a student to be eligible for Kindergarten the following year, although it is great preparation for Kindergarten.

The Pre-Kindergarten program is five days a week, Monday - Friday, and follows the VCS school calendar.

Kindergarten - 1st Grade

Across our K-1 classrooms in the Early Childhood School, we strive to provide a strong foundation for our youngest learners. As students progress, there is a noticeable transition in the nature of the expectation for what is being learned. Students transition from learning early literacy and numeracy skills, to applying those skills within new contexts. Play is an important component of learning in Grades K-1, and students are supported with the social-emotional skill development through in-class lessons and building-wide community projects. Students participate in music, art and physical education as well. In addition, students in grade 1 have access to enrichment opportunities through the Library Media Center and the VCS Inquiry Program.
